Can Self Hypnosis Help You to Quit Smoking?

Hypnotherapy is one of the popular alternative ways to quit smoking these days. This is in contrast to the mainstream stop smoking aids like Chantix or Nicoderm. The problem with these types of solutions is that they contain either prescription drugs or nicotine. If you are already taking medication for other things then you may not be able to use some of these quit smoking remedies at all.


Among the natural ways to quit, including cold turkey, acupuncture and herbal remedies, hypnotherapy has had good success. However this usually means going to a certified hypnotherapist and signing up for one or more stop smoking sessions. An alternative is to purchase one of the self-hypnosis stop smoking programs. You can get these either in download (mp3) form or on a CD. The mp3 format is handy because you can listen to it on an Ipod or other mp3 player. As I’ll explain below the self-hypnosis method has another big advantage…

Do these self-help hypnosis programs work? I have done a lot of research on the Internet and it is hard to find independent studies that show how successful these methods are. In fact many of the medical based studies say there is no conclusive evidence that hypnotherapy works period! On the other hand there are lots of people who have used these methods to successfully quit smoking.

So that leaves us with the self-help hypnosis programs - are they also successful? Again it is hard to be sure, although they all have plenty of testimonials from their clients. Most of the programs I looked at were produced by a certified hypnotherapist. And to be fair, many of them offer a complete money back guarantee if you fail to quit.

One major criticism of hypnotherapy is that although it does help you to quit smoking, you are likely to re-start at some later time. One the other hand, if you have used the self-hypnosis method previously you can simply listen to the CD or MP3 recording again whenever you feel the urge to start smoking. This can be a big advantage to keep you from re-starting the habit and getting re-addicted to nicotine.

The self-hypnosis programs are normally less expensive than an actual visit to a hypnotist (and way less expensive than following a 12 week program of something like Chantix).  I think it’s worth the money if you want to try these out since you would be spending a lot more on cigarettes anyway…
